From Ignorance to Involvement: The Path Towards a Consciousness of China
Dr. Edward Allen, Professor, Union College, USA & President, Association of SDA Historians
ABSTRACT:
Early Seventh-day Adventists were ignorant of China. Not only did they know virtually nothing about the country and its people, but they ignored it. That ended when M. E. Cornell published two articles in 1875 about Tai’ping Sabbathkeeping. Even then, it took more than 25 years to send the first official SDA missionaries to China. In the end, it took internal pressure from Abram La Rue as well as the external inspiration of the Student Volunteer Movement to impel the SDA church toward its mission in China.
